Maisie stood in the forest and she knew something was wrong. Tahdi lay at her feet with her tongue hanging lazily from her mouth. She wasn’t attuned to Maisie’s anxiety.

“Tahdi, go scout,” Maisie commanded. Her voice echoed as if she was in a cave.

Tahdi stood and ran off to the thick woods. Maisie grabbed her shoulder to lower her pack and grab a weapon. Her pack wasn’t there and she touched a naked shoulder. She looked down and the only thing she wore were her running shoes.

She thought, Why am I naked in the woods?

Then several men walked out of the woods. Tahdi was still nowhere to be found. They were men that she’d never seen before. She wondered if they were the gang who had been terrorizing towns. One of them raised his hand and fire surged from his palm. He threw the fire skyward and caught several trees on fire. Black ashes fell around them.

This is a dream, so I guess I should fight them.

Maisie threw all her energy toward running at the man of fire. Her legs only moved in slow motion, and she looked down to see that she was wearing a suit of armor. She was thankful for no longer being naked, but her speed had been taken away. The movement made a loud, banging noise. It didn’t make sense but she tried to move her arms to the sound of the metal, but she still couldn’t get her legs to move with her usual swiftness. She’d lost her speed.

Then she was face to face with the man of fire. His face was hot. She inhaled and then exhaled a flood of water. His face sizzled and he smirked. She tried to exhale again and her breath was stifled. Her face and mouth filled with water. She tried to breath and she couldn’t.

If I die in my dreams, I think I die in real life, she thought.

She shook herself awake and stared at a wooden ceiling. It took her a minute to realize she was in Edison’s bed. Her face was wet and she wondered if it was from nightmare sweats. She ran her hand through her hair, and it was drenched. Another drip came from the ceiling. She heard the faint sound of rain outside. She looked beside her and Edison was gone. From the light filtering through the windows, she surmised it was before sunrise.

“Tahdi,” Maisie whispered. Tahdi usually woke her by now. There was no movement. “Tahdi.” She called louder. Still no answer.

She threw off her sheet and light blanket. Just like in her dream, she was naked. She thought of the night before, of their lovemaking. Her mind flashed to Edison’s body, her touch, her kisses and how her body felt. She took a deep breath and looked around the room for any remnants of her clothes. She found her shorts and shirt and slid them on.

Her eyes adjusted to the dim light in the house. “Edison,” she whispered.

She heard something moving on the roof, and she walked outside to find Tahdi sitting and looking at the roof.
